Our belief was that we could ride hard and be fast, but not at the expense of being good to our fellow racers, having fun and especially, being able to poke fun at ourselves.

Since day one, The Vanilla Workshop has built the Gentle Lover’s bikes. In fact that’s a big reason I started building, so my friends and I could have cross bikes. We built everything though from lugged and fillet brazed Vanillas, to Speedvagen Racing Machines and then we rode them to pieces, or at least we tried. Keep your eyes peeled and you can still catch a cameo appearance by one of the very first GL team road bikes (circa 2000) at a local race being ridden by a guy with calves that look like cantaloupes.

Beyond riding with friends, the birth of the Lovers was an answer to the over-seriousness of some of the people that we were racing with; the Alpha male / overcompensation thing. Our belief was that we could ride hard and be fast, but not at the expense of being good to our fellow racers, having fun and especially, being able to poke fun at ourselves. These values have carried over to Speedvagen and can be used to describe what we’re about.
